Mandatory Sentences for Violent Crimes
In Pennsylvania, some convictions for violent crimes carry mandatory sentences. For example, a conviction for first-degree murder carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison or death.
Second or third-strike cases also carry mandatory sentences. A second conviction for a violent crime is a "second-strike case," carrying a mandatory 10 to 20 years in jail. A third conviction for a violent crime is a mandatory "third-strike case" requiring life in prison. Further, any violent crime committed with a firearm carries a mandatory five-year prison sentence.
So, when you have been accused of a violent crime, it is critical that you work with an experienced attorney who will not hesitate to take your case to trial.
